"There are some authors that guarantee a good read, Roy C. Booth is one of those authors, and his first team up with Brian Woods is no exception. Davi, the first of a series, is a fascinating, engrossing fantasy story with riveting characters thriving in a solid world setting." -- R. Thomas Riley, author of THE MONSTER WITHIN IDEA, Apex Publications.
Brian and Roy use a clean storytelling style in this classic tale of a dispossessed man finding his true home—and his true self—among the dwarves. It's a fast moving tale that leaves you wanting to read “just one more page!” -- --Karina Fabian, science fiction and fantasy author, www.fabianspace.com
"...a fun little tale, and a tantalizing introduction to this new
fantasy world. I look forward to more tales of Suruale." -- Kate Weber, Utter Randomonium
"From start to finish I couldn't put it down. Davi is a must read." -- Shane Moore, Author of The Abyss Walker series

I really enjoyed the story of Davi. It's rare indeed to find a human who's a better blacksmith than a dwarf. Even rarer for him to earn the respect of the dwarves. Throughout this tale, Davi breaks down barriers and is able to show the kind of man he is. Its a well done, unique story. Definitely love the idea of "The Time Keepers." Pick it up. You wont regret it.Product details

Description
Humans and dwarfs have been at odds for generations. When human
blacksmith Davi is sent to the Dwarven King to reopen the local trade
routes, he finds himself more at home with his enemies than he ever
did with his own kind.
Davi was one of the best blacksmith's around being taught the trade by his father. With the trade route being closed off Xeric came up with a plan. Send Davi to the land of the Dwarfs , burn down all his property, his home and barn his shop and let the people of Hoon think he skipped the country. Xeric was sure that Davi would be able to get the trade route back opened. When Davi bluffs his way in to see the king they soon find out his swords, shields and other works are better than any other blacksmiths. Davi is soon accepted and now lives with the dwarfs and Xeric's plan has backfired on him. The Dwarfs have opened the trade route, but took capture of Hoon and Davi... Well this is a short story so I will go no futher.
This is the first book in a series and I feel like any fantasy reader will enjoy the start of, and wait patiently for the next in the series to come out. I like the character of Davi and as one follows along with him on his journey to the Dwarven community as we see how Davi finally realizes just who he is. A cleanly written, fast read tale I feel it would be fine for teenage readers on up. . Usually I am not much of a fantasy reader but I felt this was a fun book to read.
This was by far one of the best books I've read. The suspense in the book was crazy you never know whats going to happen. I was never really into the whole mythical worlds type books, but a good friend of mine told me about this book and I picked it up and couldn't put it down until the end. Must read. I really can't wait until Mr. Woods next book.
This story has potential. I believe if it would have been longer for character development it would have been better. It seemed rushed. The characters accepted each other too quickly and then the story came to a halt too fast. Also, some of the relationships were not explained. One minute there was a form of hate but the next page they are in love?? There are a few editing problems that throw you off a bit too. All in all the concept was great. It just needed more time but its not bad from a new author.
The novel's biggest flaw is character development which is virtually non-existent. The main character is largely passive for most of the novel, simply accepting what is happening around him with little or no concern yet somehow transforms into a fearless warrior even before fighting in his first real battle. The thing is, it isn't really necessary for him to develop because things are often simply handed to him. Despite the main character's mostly untested status, centuries of resentment between humans and dwarfs, and the main character's lack of any real personality, he enjoys a meteoric rise in dwarf society, is assigned important tasks, and receives one accolade after another. Simply put, he doesn't really have to earn anything. On example is when he meets a female dwarf. Within a mere few pages, they go from tense formalities to holding hands. Another example is how he is given command of an army after fighting in a single battle which strikes me as a bit premature. The lack of a strong villain doesn't help but is par for the course. There are simply no real obstacles for the main character to overcome. Another problem is the dialogue, much of which is exposition in the form of dwarfs explaining various things to the main character who never reflects but simply accepts what he is told. And when the main character is doing the talking, his attempts at hero trash-talking sometimes fall a bit flat
“I assure you I will live, and you will die, Reyal, and it will be my blade that takes your life. This is your time to submit. Do so and live, do not and it shall be I who shall be doing the filleting.”
Whereas much time is spent explaining the intricacies of dwarf culture, the main battle at the end plays out rather abruptly. It's practically an afterthought. What it boils down to is this. Every fantasy story is basically the "hero's journey" where the main character is tested and earns their status as hero. There were no real tests here so his journey felt more like a stroll.
You wont regret it.
